A small dot on your avatar shows teammates whether you are around, and lets you set your own availability. This guide covers what the dot means, how to set your status, how to schedule time off, and where all of this shows up across Gript.
1
What the Status Dot Is
A small coloured dot on your avatar, worked out automatically from three things.
Your avatar shows one status dot. Its colour is your effective status, resolved from three layers.
LayerWhat it knows
1. ConnectionWhether you have Gript open anywhere: online or offline.
2. ActivityWhether you have been idle for a while: active or away.
3. What you setActive, Away, Busy, Do not disturb, or a scheduled holiday.
The highest layer wins, so a manual Busy or a scheduled holiday is never quietly overridden by the idle timer.
Online or offline
Green when you are connected somewhere, grey when you have closed Gript everywhere.
Active or away
After a period of no mouse or keyboard activity your dot turns yellow (Away) automatically, and back to green when you return.
What you set yourself
Active, Away, Busy, or Do not disturb, plus any holiday, out of office, or busy range you have scheduled.
Manual Busy and Do not disturb, plus a scheduled holiday or out of office, sit above the idle timer. If you set yourself Busy, you stay Busy even while idle, the dot will not silently flip to Away.
2
Dot Colours
Seven possible states, shown across five colours.
ColourMeaning
GreenActive. Online and not idle.
YellowAway. Either idle for a while, or you set Away yourself.
RedBusy or Do not disturb, whether you set it manually or scheduled it in advance.
TealOn holiday, or out of office, shown with a palm tree or plane mark on larger avatars.
GreyOffline. No live connection anywhere.
3
Setting Your Status
Click your avatar, then use the Set your status section of the menu.
1
Open the avatar menu
Click your avatar in the top right of the topbar. The menu opens with your name and email at the top, then Profile, Theme, and a Set your status section.
2
Pick a status
Choose Active, Away, Busy, or Do not disturb. The active option shows a checkmark, and your avatar's dot updates immediately.
3
Add an optional message
Type a short note, for example "In a meeting", in the message field below the status options (up to 120 characters). It saves when you click away or press Enter, and teammates see it when they hover your avatar, next to the status name.
Whatever you pick manually stays put. Only the idle timer can move you between Active and Away on its own, and only when your manual status is Active (not Busy, Do not disturb, or a schedule).
4
Going Away on its own
So your dot is honest when you walk off.
You do not have to remember to set yourself Away. If you stop using Gript for a while, your dot turns to Away by itself, and it goes back to Active the moment you touch the keyboard again.
Set me to Away afterIn Control Panel, Profile
5, 10, 15, 30 or 60 minutesHow long of nothing before your dot turns. Ten minutes is the default.
NeverThe timer leaves your dot alone entirely.
A manual status you set yourself outranks the timer. If you set Do not disturb, walking away does not quietly downgrade you to Away.
5
Scheduling Time Off
Block out a holiday, out of office, or busy range in advance.
In the same avatar menu, click Schedule time off below the status options. Pick a From and To date, a type, and an optional note, then click Add.
TypeWhat it means
HolidayYou are away and unavailable for the whole range.
Out of officeSame as holiday for status purposes: away and unavailable.
BusyShows as busy (red) for the range, without marking you fully out of office.
While you are awayWhat everyone else sees
On your avatar"On holiday until (date)" or "Out of office until (date)", wherever it appears.
In resource capacityYour available hours drop, and the bar shows a striped pattern for those days.
If somebody tries to assign you workThey see a note such as "(you) is on holiday until (date)". It is a heads-up, not a block.
1
Edit a scheduled range
Click the pencil icon next to a listed range to reopen it with its dates and note prefilled, change what you need, then click Save.
2
Remove a scheduled range
Click the × next to the range at any time to delete it.
Assigning someone during their scheduled time off is allowed. The warning is informational only, it does not block the assignment.
6
Your Presence Settings
Control the idle timer and your default status from Settings.
Open Settings › Profile and scroll to the Presence and status section.
Set me to Away after
Choose 5, 10, 15, 30, or 60 minutes of idle time before your dot turns yellow, or choose Never to turn auto away off entirely. Busy, Do not disturb, and a scheduled holiday are never overridden by this timer.
Default status
Sets your manual status directly: Active, Away, Busy, or Do not disturb. It is the same status the avatar menu sets, so changing it here updates your status straight away rather than resetting at the start of a new session. You can still change it any time from the avatar menu.
Changes in this section save automatically. A small "Saved" confirmation appears briefly after each change.
7
Where the Dot Shows Up
One dot, shown consistently everywhere an avatar appears.
The status dot is not limited to your own avatar in the topbar. It shows on everyone's avatar, everywhere Gript renders one, and updates for everyone in real time:
Assignees
On task rows, kanban cards, and the person cell in Table view.
People picker
Wherever you search for and pick a person, for example when assigning or sharing.
Comments
Next to the author of each comment on the Comments tab.
Members list
In the workspace members list in the Control Panel.
Notebook pages
On the live "who is here" avatars shown while collaborating on a notebook page.
When other people are viewing the same notebook page as you, a small bar shows their live avatars with an N here with you label, so you can see who is on the page in the moment.
Status is only ever visible to people in your own workspace. It never crosses tenants, even if an item or board is shared externally.

Common Questions
Quick answers to what people ask most.
Why did my dot turn yellow on its own?
The idle timer flipped you to Away because there was no mouse or keyboard activity for the period set in Settings › Profile › Presence and status (default 10 minutes). It flips back to green automatically once you are active again. Set it to Never in that same setting to turn auto away off.
I set myself to Busy, but I stepped away. Will I show as Away instead?
No. A manual Busy or Do not disturb, and a scheduled holiday or out of office, all sit above the idle timer. They stay put regardless of activity until you change them yourself or the schedule ends.
Can I stop someone from assigning me a task while I am on holiday?
No. The holiday note shown to the assigner is informational only, a heads up that you are unavailable, not a block. They can still assign the task.
Where can teammates see my status message?
Hovering your avatar anywhere it appears (assignee lists, the people picker, comments, the members list, notebook presence) shows your status name and, if you set one, your message.
Can people outside my workspace see my status?
No. Presence and status are scoped to your own workspace and never shown to people outside it, even on items or boards shared externally.
What is the difference between Holiday, Out of office, and Busy when scheduling time off?
Holiday and Out of office both mark you away and unavailable for the range, and reduce your available hours in the resource capacity view. Busy shows as busy (red) for the range without marking you fully out of office.
Why did my dot go orange when I did not touch it?
That is the automatic away timer. You had not used Gript for a while. It clears the moment you come back.
Can I stop it doing that?
Yes. Control Panel, Profile, Presence & status, and set Set me to Away after to Never.
