The Idea: Bring Your Own Key
Every AI feature in Gript runs on an account you connect, not on Gript's own bill.
All three share one setup, in Control Panel, then AI for documents. An administrator (or any member with their own key, if that is allowed) connects an API key.
This is a developer API key, not your ChatGPT, Claude.ai or Grok login. Those subscription apps have no API, so you need a separate pay as you go account. Once a key is connected, every AI feature that person can use runs on it, and the cost is billed to that provider account, never to Gript.
One connection, three tools
Connect a key once in Control Panel. Write with AI, Notebook AI Chat, and Inline AI Writing all use it, so there is nothing extra to set up per feature.
Workspace or personal
An admin can connect a shared workspace key, and anyone can add their own personal key if admins allow it. Personal keys bill the person, not the workspace.
Budgets and usage are visible
Admins set monthly spending caps and see usage by model and by person. Everyone sees which AI is answering before they use it.
Nothing is hidden about cost. A price disclaimer appears everywhere a figure is shown: Gript's numbers are an estimate built from the tokens each reply reports, not a bill. The provider's own billing console is always the authoritative record.

Two ways to open it

The Ask AI button in the toolbar
At the end of the document's formatting toolbar sits an Ask AI button (a sparkle icon). Click it to open the panel.

Select text first
Select any text in the document and a small popover appears with Rewrite, Shorten, Expand, Fix tone, and Translate. Picking one opens the panel and runs that action on your selection right away.
Collapse the panel with the arrow button in its header without losing your work. Your prompt and last result are still there when you reopen it. Drag the panel's left edge to resize it.

Show me first, or write into the page
Show me first
The result appears in the panel. Nothing changes in your document until you click Insert (adds it at your cursor) or Replace (swaps out your selection). The circular arrow runs it again for a different attempt.
Into the page
The AI writes straight into the document as it goes, with real formatting: headings, bold, bullet lists. There is no Insert step. Either mode can be undone like any other edit.
Write with AI always starts in Into the page mode, so by default it writes straight into the document, whether the page is blank or already full. Switch to Show me first whenever you want to review a result before it lands. The mode is not remembered per page: every page opens on Into the page again.
Attachments, history, and stopping a run

Attach files or images
Use the Plus button or drag files onto the panel. A document (PDF or Word) has its text read out and given to the AI; layout and pictures inside it are not sent. An image is actually seen by the AI, and uses more of your budget than text.

Stop mid-run
While the AI writes, the send button turns into a red Stop button. Stopping keeps everything already written: in Into the page mode the partial text still gets formatted, in Show me first mode it stays in the panel.

Full history
The panel keeps the exchange as a live thread, so your recent prompts and their results stay in view while you work. The clock icon in the header opens the full history: search everything you have generated, filter by action, and switch between This document and Everywhere.
History is kept for 90 days, then removed automatically. Only you can see your own runs; admins can see cost and token usage, never the text you generated.

2. Notebook AI Chat
A chat assistant that lives inside your notes: it searches, drafts, and edits pages with your approval.
Open any notebook and click Ask AI in the view toolbar, the row holding Cards, Table, Filter, Sort, Group and Reminders.
This is a different button from the one inside the document editor. This Ask AI opens a full chat panel over the notebook, with your notes visible beside it, reacting to what the AI does.
This is the same AI setup as Write with AI: the same providers and keys, the same access list, the same monthly budget. If you can use one, you can use the other, with nothing extra to configure.
What you can ask it to do
Search and answer
Answers questions from your notes with links to the pages it used. Matches light up on the canvas.
Draft new pages
Meeting agendas, briefs, checklists. Shows a preview card first; nothing is created until you click Create page.
Edit existing pages
Shows exactly what changes, removed lines struck through and added lines highlighted. Nothing happens until you click Apply edit.
Research the web
Searches and reads pages, always with source links. Web access is read only: it can never post, submit, or send anything.
Work with a file
Attach a PDF, Word document, or image with the Plus button, or drag it onto the box, then ask about it.
Summarize
One page, several pages, or everything about a topic.
What it can never do
The info button in the panel header shows this same list inside the app.
What the notebook AI cannot doWhy it matters

Three safety layers protect your pages: every edit is a proposal you approve, an apply is refused and rebuilt if the page changed underneath it, and every applied edit stores the previous version first so you are always one restore away from how it was.
Stopping, history, and reuse

Stop mid-answer
The send button turns into a Stop button while the AI is working. On most providers this genuinely cancels the request. Gemini and Mistral are the exception: they cannot be cancelled mid-generation, so the model finishes on their side and the run is still billed. The panel says so when you stop one of those two.

History
The clock button opens your prompt history: Recent lists everything you have asked, grouped by day; Saved holds the prompts you starred. A search box filters the list, and the trash icon on a row deletes just that one entry.

New chat
The circular arrow button starts a fresh conversation. Conversations are saved, so nothing is lost when you close the panel.

3. Inline AI Writing
AI help right where you write: the comment box, email, and reply editors. No result card, no Insert button.
Inline AI Writing turns up wherever you write a short thing.

It uses the same setup as Write with AI, so if you can use one you can use the other, with one monthly budget shared across all three tools.
Inline AI Writing command bar One box, not two
Click Ask AI in the composer's action row and a small command bar appears. Tell it what you want and it writes straight into your box.
There is no result window to copy out of and no Insert button. When it reads right, you post or send as normal.
On an empty box
Type what you want, for example "draft a reply saying yes to a call this week and ask about pricing", and it writes it in.
With text already there
Type how to change it, for example "make it shorter" or "more formal", and it rewrites your box in place. Quick chips (Improve, Shorter, Fix grammar, More formal, Warmer) cover the common ones.
Keeping at itWhat happens
Another instructionUpdates the box again, building on everything you have already told it.
TranslationPart of the same conversation, not a separate menu. Ask "translate to French" or "say this in Danish", in any of Gript's six languages.
Undo
Because the AI writes straight into your box, an Undo button appears in the command bar footer after each change and puts back exactly what was there before. Nothing is lost when a result is not what you wanted.
Email: it can write the subject line too
In the email composer the same box can write the subject line.

The footer shows which AI is answering, and a switcher if more than one provider is connected, plus a reminder that it counts against your AI budget.

Reopen a past draft
The clock icon in the header opens Recent drafts, newest first with a short preview. Open one to drop it back into your box and keep refining. Drafts clear automatically after 90 days.
Press Escape to close the command bar, or click Done.

Sounds Human, Not AI
Every AI reply is cleaned up before it lands, across all three tools.
Everything the three tools write is stripped of the usual AI tells: no em or en dashes, and none of the giveaway phrases such as "furthermore" or "I hope this email finds you well". The same clean-up applies to all three, so the tone is consistent wherever you use AI in Gript.

Connecting a Key, Budgets, and Who Can Use It
One setup screen powers all three tools. Control Panel → AI for documents.
Admins see four tabs; a non admin sees just their own key and their own usage.

Connecting a key, in two steps

Paste the key and click Verify key
Gript checks it with the provider right away, so a typo or a revoked key fails immediately rather than later when someone tries to write.

Pick a model and click Connect
Once verified, the Model list shows every model that key can actually use, fetched live from the provider. Models Gript knows come with the published price filled in; the rest are selectable too, with the price entered by hand.
A key is encrypted and never shown again, not even to the person who added it. Standby pauses a connected key so nobody can spend on it, without disconnecting it.

Everything above is Gript writing for you, using an AI provider key you connect. There is a second, separate way AI and Gript meet: an assistant you already use, outside Gript, reaching in to work with your boards.

An assistant you connect
ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok or Claude Code, reading your boards, posting comments, attaching files and proposing automation rules for you to approve. Needs no provider key and no budget.
They share nothing: no key, no budget, no settings page. You can use either on its own. Setting up an outside assistant, choosing what it is allowed to do, and the two things that most often go wrong are all in Connecting an AI assistant.

Common Questions
Quick answers to what people ask most.
Do I need my own AI account to use any of this?
Yes, in some form. Every AI feature runs on a connected API key, either a shared workspace key an admin set up, or your own personal key if admins allow personal keys. There is no AI feature that runs without a connected key.
What is the difference between Write with AI and Inline AI Writing?
Write with AI lives in documents (notebook pages, the item Document tab, doc columns) and normally shows its result in a side panel first, with Insert or Replace, though it can also write straight into the page. Inline AI Writing lives in the comment box and email composers and always writes straight into that one box, with no separate result to insert: refine it in place and just send.
What is the difference between the two "Ask AI" buttons in a notebook?
The Ask AI button in the document's formatting toolbar opens Write with AI, for drafting and editing the page you are on. The Ask AI button in the notebook's view toolbar (next to Cards, Table, Filter, Sort, Group, Reminders) opens Notebook AI Chat, a chat assistant that searches across your notes and can draft or edit pages with your approval. They are two different panels that happen to share a label.
Can the AI delete or overwrite my notes without asking?
No. Notebook AI Chat can only propose an edit; nothing changes until you click Apply edit, and if the page changed underneath the proposal, the apply is refused and rebuilt. It cannot delete pages, sections, or notebooks at all, and every applied edit keeps the previous version so you can restore it.
Why did my Notebook AI Chat run still get billed after I clicked Stop?
On most providers, Stop genuinely cancels the request and billing with it. Gemini and Mistral cannot be cancelled mid-generation: the model finishes writing on the provider's side and that run is billed even though you stopped reading. The panel tells you this is happening when you stop one of those two.
Can Inline AI Writing write my email subject line?
Yes. Ask the same command bar, for example "add a subject line", and it writes into the Subject field and leaves the body untouched. It decides between subject and body from what you ask.
Is there a separate budget for each of the three AI tools?
No. All three draw from the same monthly budget and the same access list, because they all run through the same connected provider keys. Usage in Control Panel shows the combined total by model and by person.
Are the cost figures I see in Gript exact?
No, they are an estimate. Token counts are exact, but the price per token is a rate you or Gript entered, and providers can change prices or apply discounts Gript cannot see. Always confirm the real amount in the provider's own billing console; that invoice is the authoritative record.
Does the AI's writing sound like AI?
It is deliberately cleaned up so it does not: no em or en dashes, and none of the common giveaway phrases. This applies the same way across Write with AI, Notebook AI Chat, and Inline AI Writing.
What can Notebook AI Chat never do?
It cannot delete anything, cannot move or rename pages, sections or notebooks, and cannot change a page without your click. It only sees notes you can see, and it cannot touch boards, items, files, or settings at all. Click the info button in the panel header to see this list in the app.
Can I use ChatGPT or Claude with Gript?
Yes, but not through this page. Those connect to Gript from their own side, so you give them a Gript address, sign in, and choose what they may do. It needs no provider key and no budget. See Connecting an AI assistant.
Does connecting ChatGPT use my AI budget here?
No. A connected assistant runs on its own account and Gript simply answers its requests, so nothing is counted against the budget or the usage figures on this page.
